Metro Vancouver’s food scene is world-class — but if you eat halal, you know the routine: scanning menus, asking servers the same three questions, and settling more often than you’d like. This guide is about finding the good stuff, and knowing what you’re actually getting.
“Halal” isn’t one thing — know the difference
The word gets used loosely, so it helps to know the tiers:
- Fully halal kitchen. Every item is halal; there’s no pork or alcohol on-site at all. Nothing to cross-contaminate.
- Halal options. A mostly non-halal kitchen with a few halal dishes — higher risk of shared fryers and surfaces.
- Halal-sourced vs. certified. Halal-sourced means the meat comes from halal suppliers. Certified means a third-party body has audited and certified it. Both can be legitimate — just ask which one a place means, and be wary of vague claims.
At Kaji Glaze, the whole kitchen is halal: 100% halal, chicken only, halal-sourced, with no pork and no alcohol anywhere. We’re upfront that we’re not yet third-party certified — and we’d rather tell you exactly what we are than overclaim.
What to look for
A few quick tells that you’re dealing with the real thing:
- They’re specific. “100% halal, whole kitchen” beats a vague “we have halal.”
- They’ll tell you their supplier or certifier if you ask.
- No pork or alcohol on the menu at all is a strong signal of a fully halal kitchen.
- Consistency across platforms — the same claim on their site, Google, and the delivery apps.
The rise of halal hot chicken
